In the first part, I give some history and philosophy of the mathematical theories of infinity, illustrated with some puzzles. The second part is about solving equations on infinite streams: under what conditions does a recursive definition produce a unique function on streams? The third part is about a new kind data type, which I call "Wander Types". It allows the definition of non-well-founded structures with fine control on branching behaviour.

AiML-2014: 1ST CALL FOR PAPERS 10th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN MODAL LOGIC, GRONINGEN, 5-8 AUGUST, 2012 http://www.philos.rug.nl/AiML2014/ Advances in Modal Logic is an initiative aimed at presenting the state of the art in modal logic and its various applications. The initiative consists of a conference series together with volumes based on the conferences. Information about the AiML series can be obtained at http://www.aiml.net. AiML-2014 is the tenth conference in the series. PAPER SUBMISSIONS There will be two types of submissions to AiML-2014: (1) Full papers for publication in the proceedings and presentation at the conference. (2) Short presentations intended for presentation at the conference but not for the published proceedings. Both types of papers should be submitted electronically using the EasyChair submission page at https://www.easychair.org/account/signin.cgi?conf=aiml2014 At least one author of each accepted paper or short presentation must register for and attend the conference. (1) FULL PAPERS Authors are invited to submit, for presentation at the conference and publication in the proceedings, full papers reporting on original research and not submitted elsewhere. The proceedings of AiML-2014 will be published by College Publications http://www.collegepublications.co.uk in a volume to be made available at the conference. The tutorial will be divided into the following sections (time permitting). I. An overview of the major existing theories of vagueness (epistemicism, additional truth values, truth gaps, supervaluationism, plurivaluationism). II. The problem of defining vagueness. Shortcomings of previous definitions (e.g. borderline cases, semantic indeterminacy, tolerance). Proposal: vagueness as closeness. If this proposal is correct then the correct theory of vagueness must involve degrees of truth. III. Fuzzy logic and the problem of artificial precision. Problems with existing solutions (fuzzy epistemicism, fuzzy metalanguage, blurry sets). Proposed solution: fuzzy plurivaluationism -- a theory that combines degrees of truth with semantic indeterminacy of the sort found in 'supervaluationist' (more correctly: plurivaluationist) approaches. IV. Fuzzy logic and the problem of truth-functionality. It has been argued that fuzzy logic based theories of vagueness are incompatible with data about the assertability of compound propositions in the presence of borderline cases. A negative assessment of these arguments will be given. V. Integrating the fuzzy theory of vagueness into the wider theoretical landscape. Case study: degrees of belief. In particular, the relationship between degrees of belief arising from uncertainty (ignorance) and degrees of belief arising from vagueness. Dr. Andreas Abel at NII Logic Seminar Date: October 11, 2013, 14:00--16:00 Place: National Institute of Informatics, Room 1210 (12th floor) 場所: 国立情報学研究所 12階 1210室 (半蔵門線,都営地下鉄三田線・新宿線神保町駅または東西線竹橋駅より徒歩5分) (地図 http://www.nii.ac.jp/about/access/) Speaker: Dr. Andreas Abel (Chalmers and Gothenburg University) Title: Copatterns: Programming Infinite Structures by Observations Abstract: Inductive datatypes provide mechanisms to define finite data such as finite lists and trees via constructors and allow programmers to analyze and manipulate finite data via pattern matching. In this paper, we develop a dual approach for working with infinite data structures such as streams. Infinite data inhabits coinductive datatypes which denote greatest fixpoints. Unlike finite data which is defined by constructors we define infinite data by observations. Dual to pattern matching, a tool for analyzing finite data, we develop the concept of copattern matching, which allows us to synthesize infinite data. This leads to a symmetric language design where pattern matching on finite and infinite data can be mixed. We present a core language for programming with infinite structures by observations together with its operational semantics based on (co)pattern matching and describe coverage of copatterns. Our language naturally supports both call-by-name and call-by-value interpretations and can be seamlessly integrated into existing languages like Haskell and ML. We prove type soundness for our language and sketch how copatterns open new directions for solving problems in the interaction of coinductive and dependent types. Update monads are compatible compositions of reader and writer monads given by a set and a monoid. Distributive laws between such monads are given by monoid actions. We also discuss a dependently typed generalization of update monads. Unlike simple update monads, those cannot be factored into a reader and writer monad. Dependently typed update monads arise from cointerpreting directed containers, by which we mean interpreting the opposite of the category directed containers into the category of set functors. (Joint work with Danel Ahman, University of Edinburgh.)
